Winter is almost here, the swim season is winding down, and if you’re like most Adelaide pool owners, you’re starting to think about what your pool needs before winter properly sets in.  One question the crew at Adelaide Aqua Boys hears constantly this time of year is: “Do I just  need a regular clean or is it time for an acid wash?”

It’s a fair question — and the honest answer is that they’re two very different things. One is routine maintenance. The other is a more involved process that your pool might genuinely need, or might not need at all. Getting this wrong can cost you money either way: pay for an acid wash when a good clean would do, and you’ve wasted your coin. Skip an acid wash when your pool really needs one, and you’ll be dealing with a much bigger mess come spring.

So let’s break it down properly.

What Is a Regular Pool Clean in Adelaide?

A regular pool clean is exactly what it sounds like — the routine Pool maintenance in Adelaide that keeps your pool water safe, clear and inviting. This is the kind of service that should be happening consistently throughout the year, not just before winter.

A thorough regular pool clean typically includes:

• Skimming leaves and surface debris from the water

• Brushing the walls, steps, and floor of the pool to dislodge buildup

• Vacuuming the pool floor manually or via robotic cleaner

• Cleaning out pump and skimmer baskets

• Backwashing or filter cleaning

• Testing and balancing water chemistry — pH, alkalinity, sanitiser and stabiliser levels • Adding the appropriate chemicals to bring the water back into balance

For most Adelaide pools that have been regularly maintained through the summer, this is all you’ll need before closing up for winter. The key word there is “regularly maintained.” If your pool has been neglected, or if you’ve had a rough summer with algae issues, cloudiness or heavy use, a regular clean might not be enough on its own.

What Is an Acid Wash?

A far more involved procedure is an acid wash. It involves draining the pool completely and applying a diluted hydrochloric acid solution directly to the pool surface — the plaster, pebble, Crete, fibreglass or render — to strip away a thin layer of the surface along with whatever has stained, scaled or embedded itself into it.

It’s sometimes called a “drain and clean” and is used to tackle problems that brushing,  vacuuming, and chemical treatment simply can’t fix from the water side. The acid physically

dissolves calcium deposits, algae roots and deep staining that have penetrated the pool surface itself.

Important to understand: an acid wash removes a very fine layer of the pool surface each time it’s done. It’s not something you want to do every year unless the pool genuinely needs it. Most well-maintained Adelaide pools might need an acid wash every 5 to 7 years — or only when specific problems arise.

Signs Your Pool Needs an Acid Wash (Not Just a Regular Clean)

So how do you know which one your pool actually needs? Here are the telltale signs that a  regular clean won’t cut it and your pool is overdue for an acid wash:

1. Persistent Green or Black Algae You Can’t Shift

Green algae can usually be treated in the water with shock dosing and brushing. But if you’ve got black algae — those dark, stubborn spots that keep coming back no matter what you throw at them — that’s a different story. Black algae has roots that penetrate deep into porous pool surfaces. Brushing and chemicals might knock back the top layer, but the roots remain, and it regrows within weeks. An acid wash is often the only way to properly eliminate it.

2. Heavy Brown, Rust, or Mineral Staining on the Pool Surface

Adelaide has notoriously hard, mineral-rich water. Over time, calcium, iron, manganese, and other minerals in SA Water can leach into pool surfaces and cause discolouration that no amount of brushing will fix. If your pool walls look brown, rust-coloured, or patchy and dull even after a good clean, surface staining has likely gone too deep for topical treatment. An acid wash will strip it back and restore the surface.

3. Heavy Calcium Scale Buildup on the Waterline or Pool Surface

That rough, crusty white or grey buildup around the waterline tile and on pool surfaces is calcium scaling — a very common issue in South Australia due to our hard water and hot summers. Mild scaling can be treated with descaling products and brushing, but heavy,  widespread scale that’s built up over multiple seasons often needs the more aggressive approach of an acid wash to properly remove.

4. The Pool Has Been Left Green and Neglected for an Extended Period

If your pool has turned completely green, brown, or black and has been sitting that way for weeks or months — maybe a rental property you’ve just taken over, or a pool that wasn’t looked after over winter last year — you’re probably looking at an acid wash situation. At that point, the organic matter and algae have had time to embed themselves into the surface.  Shocking the water and cleaning from the top down just won’t get into the surface itself.

5. The Pool Surface Looks Rough, Dull, or Discoloured Despite Good Water Chemistry

If your water chemistry is spot on but the pool surface itself looks tired, rough to the touch,  or unevenly discoloured, the issue is in the surface — not the water. This is particularly

common in older pebble Crete pools around Adelaide’s southern suburbs, where years of mineral buildup, UV exposure and chemical interaction leave the surface looking worn and blotchy. An acid wash can rejuvenate the surface and give it a fresh start before winter.

Signs Your Pool Just Needs a Good Regular Clean

On the flip side, if your pool ticks any of these boxes, a proper regular clean — done thoroughly  — is likely all you need before winter:

• The water is clear or only slightly cloudy, with no persistent green tinge

• The pool surface looks clean and even in colour, just dusty or with minor debris

• You’ve been maintaining the pool consistently through summer with regular chemical  balancing

• There’s no black algae or deep-rooted staining on the pool walls or floor

• A good chemical shock and brush brings the water back to clear within a day or two

In this case, a thorough pre-winter service — vacuuming, brushing, chemical balance, filter clean, and basket clean-out — will leave your pool in great shape to sit through the cooler months without becoming a problem.

Quick Comparison: Regular Clean vs Acid Wash

Best suited for? Well-maintained pools Neglected, stained, or algae affected pools
Wears pool surface? No Yes — use sparingly

A Word on Fibreglass Pools in Adelaide

Fibreglass pools are extremely popular across Adelaide’s southern suburbs — and for good reason. They’re smooth, algae-resistant, and relatively low maintenance. But they also require a slightly different approach when it comes to deep cleaning.

A traditional acid wash is generally not recommended for fibreglass pools as the acid can damage the gel coat surface. However, there are gentler acid-based treatments and specialist fibreglass cleaning methods that can tackle staining and oxidation without harming the surface. If you’ve got a fibreglass pool and it’s looking worse for wear heading into winter, talk to the team at Adelaide Aqua Boys before you do anything — they’ll tell you exactly what’s safe and what’s not for your specific pool type.
