Adelaide winters are mild compared to most of the world — temperatures typically hover  between 8°C and 16°C, which means your pool doesn’t have to go completely dormant.  Whether you’re planning a relaxed poolside gathering or simply keeping your pool in great  shape through the cooler months, here’s what you need to know.

️1. Start with a Deep Pool Cleaning

Winter brings more wind, rain and falling leaves, which means debris builds up faster than in  summer. Before any gathering — or just as part of regular winter maintenance — give your  pool a thorough clean:

∙ Skim the surface daily to remove leaves and debris

∙ Vacuum the pool floor to prevent sediment buildup

∙ Brush tiles and walls to stop algae from taking hold in cooler, slower-circulating water

A clean pool in winter is much easier to maintain than one that’s been left to accumulate  months of grime by spring.

 2. Check and Balance Water Chemistry

Cold water can actually mask chemical imbalances — and algae still grows in Adelaide’s mild  winters, just more slowly. Test and adjust:

∙ pH levels (aim for 7.2–7.6)

∙ Chlorine levels (can be slightly reduced in winter but not skipped)

∙ Alkalinity and calcium hardness

Balanced water protects your pool equipment and keeps the water clear all season long.

⚙️3. Adjust Your Filter Run Times

In summer, you might run your pump 8–10 hours a day. In winter, you can scale back to 4–6  hours, ideally during the warmer part of the day. Before hosting a gathering, check:

∙ Pool pump and filter are operating properly

∙ Skimmer baskets are clear of debris

∙ Pool lights are working (Adelaide’s shorter daylight hours mean evening lighting  matters more)

4. Manage Winter Debris Around the Pool

Trees shed more in autumn and winter, so your pool surrounds need extra attention:

∙ Sweep the deck regularly to prevent wet leaves becoming a slip hazard

∙ Trim overhanging branches before they drop into the pool

∙ Consider a pool cover when the pool isn’t in use — it dramatically reduces debris and  heat loss

A tidy, safe pool deck is especially important in winter when surfaces can become slippery  from rain.

❄️5. Maintain Water Temperature

Adelaide winters rarely get cold enough to freeze a pool, but water temperatures can drop  to uncomfortable levels for swimming. Options to keep it enjoyable:

∙ A pool heater or heat pump can extend your swimming season well into winter

∙ A solar cover (thermal blanket) retains heat overnight and reduces chemical  evaporation

∙ Running your pump during the warmest part of the day helps circulate warmer water

 6. Shock Your Pool If Needed

After a period of heavy rain or if the water has turned cloudy, a shock treatment will clear  things up quickly. In winter:

∙ Shock at least 24–48 hours before guests arrive

∙ Allow chlorine levels to return to safe swimming levels (ideally 1–3 ppm) before  anyone gets in

 7. Protect Your Pool Equipment Over Winter

Winter is a good time to inspect and service equipment before the busy summer season  ahead:

∙ Check for cracks in tiles, coping, or the pool shell (winter moisture can worsen  existing damage)

∙ Inspect seals and O-rings on the pump and filter

∙ Lubricate any moving parts as needed

 8. Set Up for Winter Comfort

Hosting a pool party in winter requires a little extra thought for guest comfort:

∙ Set up a sheltered, warm area nearby (a covered pergola or patio heater makes a big  difference)

∙ Provide plenty of warm towels and possibly robes

∙ Consider a firepit or outdoor heater to keep the vibe cosy

∙ Hot drinks and warming food options will be far more appreciated than icy cocktails!

9. Final Check Before Guests Arrive

Just before your event:

∙ Skim the pool one last time

∙ Check water clarity and temperature

∙ Ensure all equipment is running and the pool area is dry and safe underfoot

Keep Your Pool Winter-Ready All Season

Winter pool maintenance in Adelaide is less about shutting things down and more about  staying on top of the slower pace of debris and chemistry changes. A little consistent care  through the cooler months means your pool will be in perfect condition when summer rolls  back around.

Adelaide Aqua Boys offer winter maintenance packages to keep your pool clean, balanced,  and guest-ready all year round — so you can focus on the party while the professionals  handle the pool.
